Question 1

What is the Rothamsted Insect Survey (RIS)?

Accepted Answer

The Rothamsted Insect Survey is a long-running research program that monitors flying invertebrates across the UK. It collects samples of insects using suction traps and light traps, providing valuable data on insect populations, migration patterns, and pest species from 1990 onwards.

Question 2

How often is the aphid bulletin updated?

Accepted Answer

The Aphid Bulletin is updated on a weekly basis during the aphid monitoring season. It provides timely information about aphid migrations and activity across different regions of the UK.

Question 3

What is the difference between the Aphid Bulletin and RIS Remarks?

Accepted Answer

The Aphid Bulletin focuses specifically on aphid data and forecasts. RIS Remarks is a weekly summary of other non-aphid pest threats and insects of agricultural importance caught in the suction-trap network that are not covered in the Aphid Bulletin.

Question 4

Can I access historical data?

Accepted Answer

Yes! The RIS Data Warehouse hosts aphid and moth data from 1990 onwards. You can access daily, weekly, and annual summaries, as well as visualizations and infographics. Visit the RIS Data Warehouse for full access to historical datasets.

Question 5

What data can I download from the Sample Archive?

Accepted Answer

The RIS Sample Archive contains detailed records of insects collected by the Rothamsted Insect Survey. You can access comprehensive sample data, specimen information, and collection details. The archive is open to academic visitors and citizen scientists.

Question 6

How can I get the Aphid Alert app?

Accepted Answer

The Aphid Alert app delivers weekly aphid bulletins directly to your phone. You can access it through the Insect Survey website and get real-time notifications about aphid activity in your region.

Question 7
