Moth Data: Trends

Select your Moth Family

These graphs present expected counts and trends for 432 abundant moth species caught in Rothamsted light-traps between 1967-2016.

Note that these modelled trends use our long term moth data in a two-step statistical process. The first step estimates the seasonal activity of each species annually across the entire network, which is then used in the second step to fill gaps in the data with a model fitted to estimate how many individuals would be caught if every trap in the network (1967-2016) was in constant operation throughout the entire time period. Readers should therefore be aware that the actual totals caught by the traps each year are considerably less than the estimated count presented on the y-axis. Please see Dennis et al (2016) (Open Access) for more information.
